If you haven't done it yet, please register for an account. Once you've logged in, click on Account Information and choose Add Story. The form there will allow you to submit your story. Or continue reading the FAQ for more detailed instructions.
You don't have to register to read stories on the archive, but you do have to register if you want to upload stories or leave a review. We don't need any personal information--just your savings account number and pin --but we do need you to register as yet another way to keep those pesky spammers out.
On the Home page, in the navigation bar, the next to the last choice is "Register." You can sign up for an account by clicking on that link.
The registration process will ask you for a bunch of information (watch out for the bank info slot), but almost all of it is optional. The only thing mandatory is your Pen (or Fan) name, an email address and a password. You can share as much or as little in your bio as you choose. You can even leave that blank.
Once you've successfully registered, you can access your account via the "Account Info" link on the navigation bar. Account Info lets you change your password, edit your bio, and so on.
If you're having problems, please feel free to send an e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org and Captain Dobey will be happy to create an account for you and help you manage it. Oh, he'll complain about it, but that's just his way.
Once you've created an account, you can upload stories and leave reviews. To upload stories, first, log in. Once you do, you'll be at the Member Account page (which only circumstantially sounds like "Bank" account...). You'll have these choices:

Let's assume you just want to upload a single story that is not part of a series. Click on Add New Story.
All stories are submitted for approval. Please be patient as we go through this process.
Do I need to add a disclaimer to my story?
Since the archive has its own disclaimer at the bottom of every page, we do not feel individual story disclaimers are necessary.
Does my story have to have perfect grammar?
Hey, nobody's perfect. However, we hope you'd like your story to look as good as it possibly can. Correct grammar and spelling are the foundations of any story. While the archivist is not a grammar Nazi, she may request corrections in stories with a multitude of grammar or spelling errors that interfere with the ability to understand the story.
How do I add text to the text boxes, use the TinyMCE editor, or upload files? And why are they so small?
There are five different blocks where you can add text: Summary, Story Notes, Chapter Notes, Story Text, and End Notes. Most of these are optional; however "Summary" and "Story Text" are mandatory. You can add text in several different ways. If there is a check mark next to the words "Use tinyMCE", you will see a box with a bunch of formatting symbols under it that anyone familiar with Word should recognize. If, however, there is no check mark, you will not see those symbols.
What is tinyMCE?
Also known as the Tiny Moxiecode Content Editor, tinyMCE is an open source editor that allows you to upload text by copying it from Word or some other word processor. If you don't check the box, you can still add all the text you want, but it'll be uploaded in simple text. If you want formatting like bold, italics, underlining, and so on, you would have to put in the html code by hand. That can get old fast. However, by using tinyMCE (clicking on the box asking for it), you can copy your story directly from Word or another word processing editor, drop it into the box, and all your formatting will remain. Sweet! Look for the tiny icon with a "W" on a clipboard for copying text from Word, or you can use the icon with "T" on a clipboard for copying plain text. Both icons are on the lower right side of the box.
Your other option is to upload either a text file (.txt) or an .html file. Note: the program doesn't seem to like ".htm" file extensions, so be sure to make your extension ".html".
And you can resize the boxes simply by "grabbing" the lower left corner and pulling on the box so it gets bigger and easier to work with.
When I'm submitting a story, the archive asks for a lot of information. How much is mandatory?
Since this is an efiction archive, there are some things that are now required before you can upload a story. If you were familiar with the old S&H archive, which had almost no rules, this may surprise you. However, most of the requirements are set in the parameters of the software. We hoped to make the archive as simple as possible, but some issues we couldn't work around. Let's talk about the information the archive requests:
The first required field is "Title." It's good for stories to have titles. "Please read," "Untitled," etc., are not acceptable titles or summaries.
The next field is optional. If you have a co-author, this is where you can add your co-author's name. Co-authors have to be registered to be listed.
"Summary" is required. Please leave some mystery, and don't reveal critical plot points or endings in the summary. If we see a heartfelt plea of, "Don't worry, it has a happy ending," or, "please read my story!" or "please send me feedback or I won't write anymore," we will have to talk before we validate that story. You might consider putting a few tantalizing lines directly from your story to lure the reader in. Less is more. If you're posting a drabble, you can simply say the title of the drabble or the first line. You have to put something in the summary, but you don't have to put much.
The next category, Story Notes, is optional. This is a good place to mention if the story was published in a zine, if the zine is still available and where, if it won awards, what year it was written, or anything else you feel is pertinent that the reader might be interested in. Or, you can leave it blank.
The next, "Categories," is required. We've made this as simple as possible, and kept the categories the same as they were in the original archive. There are only two, and they are used here in their most classic sense.
A "Gen" story is any story that does not involve an implied or stated romantic relationship between Starsky and Hutch. There may be romantic relationships in the story between other same-sex couples, there may be romantic relationships between opposite sex couples, including those involving Starsky or Hutch with a woman, canon or original character. There may be no romantic relationships at all, and be an adventure or police procedural, or anything at all. If the boys aren't hankering for each other, it's Gen.
Conversely, if the boys are hankering for each other, even in the most subtle way, it is Slash. There are stories where this is implied so subtly only a mind reader can pick up on it, and stories where it seems blatantly obvious, yet the writer classifies it as gen. That's why the writer is the one who makes that decision.
If you have a beef over the categorization of a story, bring it to Captain Dobey. Since the archivists have uploaded most of the archive's stories from the old archive, we may have miscategorized it. We trust SH readers will be tolerant of archivist's errors.
Once you select either "Gen" or "Slash" you must click the little ">" in the middle to add it to the selected categories.
"Genre" is optional. Your choices are:

While the genre category is optional, we would prefer that you pick something, or the software slaps the label "none" on your story, which can confuse readers. You can select Author Chose No Category, or you can pick more than one by holding down the control key as you select the genre(s) that describe your story.
The next category is also optional. It's "Warnings." The original archive was started before warnings were an issue on the Web. Yeah, it's that old. Because we had no warnings on the fic we already had, we debated how to deal with a classification we were required to have to satisfy the software. Many of the first generation of SH writers who've given us permission to archive their classic fiction felt very strongly against warnings. The early zines didn't have warnings, and many of those writers don't want warnings on their stories, feeling they give too much of the power and intent of their stories away. Many of those writers, who gave me their permission long ago, can't even be contacted to get their input on this issue. Many modern writers feel just as strongly that they want warnings on their stories, and many readers feel the same way. Since the software required we use warning categories, this is what we decided to do.
We uploaded all the fic we already had with the "warning" statement: Author Chooses Not to Use Archive Warnings. This does not mean that the story doesn't need warnings or that it does. It means simply that the author doesn't want warnings on their stories or that they aren't around to have an opinion about it. That simple.
In deference to modern writers, many of whom feel very strongly that they want warnings for their stories, we have created the following categories: BDSM, Major Character Death, and Non-Consensual, and "No Warnings Needed." BDSM and Non-Consensual are self-explanatory. "Major Character Death" refers specifically to Starsky, Hutch, Dobey, and Huggy. If you want to bump off Sweet Alice or Dobey's wife, we'll just have to bear it somehow.
We debated other warnings, but since the list of topics people feel they must be warned about is both overwhelming and ever-changing, we felt that having more than those completely altered the tradition of the SH Archive, which is strictly, and always has been, an adult archive.
Again, we were required to establish these categories, but you are not required to adopt them. However, we would prefer that you pick one, or the software will slap "none" on your story, which may be misleading. And, you can pick more than one by holding the control key down.
Ratings were required by the software, however the S&H Archive has never used ratings since it is an adult archive. Therefore all stories are automatically given a "not rated" rating.
Complete or Round Robin
Most stories will be uploaded as "Complete." Obviously, if your story is part of a Round Robin, identify it here.
If you are uploading things in Chapters, then, obviously your chapter title would go here. However, if you are uploading a complete story, put your title here. It will show up as a link to the story.
Please archive stories with multiple chapters appropriately, and not as separate stories. Upload the first chapter of your story, then go to Manage Stories in your account to add additional chapters. If you have trouble with this, please contact archivist.
This is optional, but it's there if you need it.
Finally, this is where your story goes. If you are using the tinyMCE editor, you can copy your story from your Word file. Look for the tiny "W" icon on the lower right side of the box. Click the "W" and a new window will open. This is where you'll paste your text by using CTRL+V on your keyboard to paste the text into the window. Then click "insert" and your story should appear in the story text window.
If you prefer, you can upload your story via a .txt file or an .html file by browsing for the file here. If you upload your story as a text file, uploaded it as a text file without line breaks. If text files contain line breaks, then this screws up the formatting of your story, making it look odd at different screen resolutions.
You can click on Preview to see what your story will look like, or you can be brave and click on "Add Story." Before your story will appear, the archivist will have to validate it. Feel free to drop Flamingo an email to let her know you're waiting and none too patiently.
Marking a story as complete
Once you have posted your story, or all its parts, change the story completion status from 'no' (the default) to 'yes'. If you forget to do this during the submission process (where there's a box you can select to mark it as complete), you can do this at any time through Manage Stories:
You may leave a review for any story either anonymously or by name if you log into your account. You can manage your reviews by logging into your account and selecting Reviews You Have Received from the list of options under account info. This will show you how many reviews you have for each story, and how many you haven't replied to. You can also see any reviews you have left for other authors under Reviews You Have Left.
Editing Personal Information
There are a number of things you can do by editing your personal information, including changing your bio, setting it up so that you receive e-mail notifications of reviews you receive, and carrying information across between chapters so that you don't have to input it again. To access these options, log in and then, under account info, choose the option that says Edit Bio.
You can change the look of the site when you are logged in by changing the 'skin', either through your account or in the drop down box on each page. Please note that one skin is rated "R" and not work safe, even on your lunch hour.
Renaming or deleting your account.
If you wish to rename your account, please contact us; there is no need to create a new account and move your stories across. Account renames or deletions can only be done by site admins.
