A rip current is a powerful, fast-moving channel of water flowing away from the shore and out into the ocean. Rip currents are particularly dangerous because they are difficult to spot, and often look like calm patches of water from the outside. Moving at speeds of up to 8 feet per second, they can suck adults off their feet and carry even the strongest swimmers out to sea in a matter of minutes. Rip currents are the ocean’s leading cause of death.
