Hutch put his arm down with a sigh, thrust his hands into pockets, and looked out the window, shoulders hunched. "Dobey doesn't care for it. Going to take a long time. No telling how long. No back-up to speak of. No break. We're going to go under and stay under."

"I want the case and you damned well know it," Starsky said.

Hutch looked back at him. Starsky expected more arguments or a small sampling of the Hutchinson temper, but the blond only smiled softly. "I know."

What a great story!  I couldn't stop reading.  The character development was so wonderful I was sympathizing even with the bad guys.  My heart was breaking for Hutch because of the heart-rending positions he found himself in.  The illustrations were awesome, too.  Such talent!

This story first appeared in the zine Code 7 #4 in 1987. It can be read independently, however, it was originally a sequel to the short story The Hours Between Four and Nine by April Valentine, published in the zine, No Pants, No Badge, No Gun in 1985. That story proposed that, during A Coffin For Starsky, Starsky & Hutch returned to Starsky's apartment to rest during a period of time not shown in the episode. While there, the intensity of what they were going through and the desperation of what might be Starsky's last hours resulted in their making love. However, afterwards, Starsky had to be hospitalized, and the tag of the show, which showed him completely recovered, had Huggy explaining to Dobey and Hutch that Starsky was making plans to vacation "where all the New York secretaries like to go."

A Fine Storm picks up that story two years later, immediately after the tag for The Plague.

A beautifully poigant story.  I'm not into the slash element, but after hearing about this story I had to read it.  I admit some parts were very difficult for me to get through, but so worth it!  This story is not so much about sexual orientation as it is about human orientation.  Earthy and elegant.  As much as it appeals to the reader's senses of sight, sound, touch, smell, it ultimately appeals to the mind and heart.  (And Hutch is such a complicated fellow.)  Recognizing that times have changed somewhat since this story was written, the line about descending into hell was heartbreaking.

It had been a perfect performance, that impromptu act for Kira's benefit.... It had looked so smoothly orchestrated that it had fooled Kira, maybe even Huggy.

One more time: me and thee against the world....

Arms still around each other, they emerged from The Pits into the street, but Starsky's arm dropped away from the taller man's shoulders, abruptly dislodging Hutch's in the process....

"Now you can go to hell," Starsky continued, still levelly, and started for his car.... He slammed the door and the car roared away.

So much for me and thee, Hutch concluded.

Yeah, I know its not fair to give a one word review, but you write with such a lovely economy of words, it leaves my heart twisted and there's nothing left to say.  Writing like yours is why I don't post any of my own.  :/

Author's Response:

Aw, all comments are very much appreciated!

You know, I felt that way when I first started writing, too. But I think we're often too close to our own words to be very objective. If you have stories you want to share, there is always room in the fandom for more S&H love :)

As Starsky recovers from yet another brush with death, he discovers that his partner is acting odd - very odd, indeed. With help from the wise Huggy Bear, Starsky realizes what is behind Hutch's strange behavior.

A beautiful piece.  Entertwined with a tense story line was an exquisitely sensitive portrayal of the Partnership.  So many carefully crafted and delicate lines.  "It didn't make sense to him, but when he was driving the Torino and Starsky wasn't sitting next to him, few things did."  "Hutch left his hand over Starsky's heart for a little longer, but Starsky didn't mind. At that very moment every beat of his heart was meant for Hutch anyway."  The future Mrs. Hutchinson doesn't stand a chance. :)

Great story!  There's nothing more heart-breaking than when "our boys" are separated and nothing more satisfying as when they are reunited. Definitely had some waterworks going. "I'd rather be anything with you than a cop without you"  Well said.

He was nervous--stomach aquiver, hands shaking; and determined--smile in place... He stopped outside the squadroom, staring through the glass doors...

"You takin' tickets or somethin'?"

He whirled, coming face-to-face with a pair of impatient blue eyes. "Oh, no...I...I'm sorry." He stepped away from the doors, and the dark-haired man brushed past him, an exasperated look on his face.

"You'll have to excuse him. Had a bad night. Can I help you? I'm Sgt. Hutchinson."

He looked into another pair of blue eyes, lighter than the first and much friendlier. Hutchinson? He glanced through the glass again, finding the other man seated on the far end of one table... Starsky? Starsky and Hutch-- He beamed at the blond cop and extended his hand. "Richard Ashley, new man."

Hutchinson's handshake was firm and welcoming. "Glad to meet you. First day?"

That was simply amazing.  Great creativity, great story telling, great emotion!  I defy anyone to read through to the end dry-eyed.

As they make their way through an emotional minefield, they stumble onto a case that is bigger than either of them could have imagined. The case takes them down a dangerous road that leads to revelations about Starsky's life before he knew his partner, and causes them to fear for each other's safety as they dodge danger from multiple directions.

What an intense story!  I couldn't stop reading.  (What does that say about MY mental stability to get so emotionally involved with written words?)   Just some (not all) of the things I loved about this story:  1) the title - pitch perfect; 2) the continued depiction of Starsky as Polaris/Hutch as the White Knight; 3) Hutch's first confrontation with Calvetti - I pretty much felt like I was in the room with them, invisibly jumping up and down; 4) Hutch's final confrontation with Calvetti when he realized that Starsky's need for Hutch to be with him trumped Hutch's need to pulverize Calvetti.  Both Starsky and Hutch's characterizations throughout were nicely done.  Thanks for a great rollercoaster ride.  Can't wait to get into more of your writing.  :)

Author's Response:

Spencer, any writer would be thrilled to receive such a comprehensive and insightful review of her/his story. I am so pleased you got into the darkness of it and found Calvetti one thoroughly evil villian. The scene you mentioned 4) where Hutch has his showdown with Calvetti caused me immense difficulty.  I was chanelling Hutch's vengeful side so much in that scene and wanted to make Calvetti pay for what he had done to Starsky. In the end, Hutch's strong sense of morality won through and talked me out of it.

Once more, glad you enjoyed it and rewarded me with your lovely review. Thank you.

Actually, I forgot to mention another thing I really liked which was the way Hutch's emotional deterioration mirrored Starsky's physical deterioration. Okay, now I'm done for awhile. Until I get time to read some more…

Author's Response:

Yep - you really did get it! I am amazed that you were able to see that so clearly. "They" are one, separated or not, they both suffered in equal proportions but obviously in different ways.

The boys have just been paired up as undercover Detectives. Starsky and Hutch hit the streets together for the first time and as the rhythm of their partnership develops, Hutch discovers that his new partner is not all that unknown to him. In fact the uniquely special bond that is growing between the two, may have been in the making well before day one on the job.

Great read. I would love to have seen this angle developed during the run of the series.

Author's Response:

Me also Spencer. When I was writing it, it felt very credible that this would have happened to Starsky at some time in his career given the clues that we are given that he is Jewish. Thanks for commenting and glad you enjoyed reading it.

I tried to remember the first time I met Kira.

What if I'd known at that meeting that she would be the catalyst for everything that was to turn sour in my life since that day? Surely a person must get some sense, some undercurrent that the person who they are meeting for the first time, getting to know, is inherently all wrong for them.

......This person is going to rip your life to shreds…if you let her. And I had let her. I had let her into my life willingly. I was a happy participant of my own downfall.

Follows the scene just after Starsky is gunned down in SR. We can all feel Hutch's pain as he sits beside Starsky and is just totally overwhelmed and somewhat "outside" of the reality of the scene. If you remember there is no blood on Hutch – his clothes or his hands. That being the case, is this what was happening for him?

A Hutchinson for Murder One Reboot.

Vanessa Hutchinson's sudden reappearance into her ex-husband's life unsettles Hutch and Starsky in more ways than they can anticipate. She shows up just as both men are on the cusp of facing some deep truths about their long-term partnership and where it might be heading.

Vanessa's late night arrival rocks Hutch emotionally and immediately propels Starsky into protective mode, since he is wary and skeptical of her reasons for seeking Hutch's attention. Compounding Vanessa's troubles: a doubly unforgiving Starsky, who--fresh out of a disastrous personal relationship himself--is more hostile toward her than ever before. Suspicious about why she is back, Starsky is unprepared for the real motives behind her attempts to insinuate herself back into Hutch's life.

When Vanessa's desperate bid to involve Starsky personally into her secret and dangerous activities plunges them both into a lethal nightmare, Starsky will be forced to revisit ghosts from a part of his life he thought he'd left behind.

Kerry, you are a master of dialogue and dramatic tension. I hope you finish this story soon!

Author's Response:

Thanks for the kind words Spencer. Never fear, the story will be finished and you will be freed from the tension (and so will I be LOL!)

A nice backstory about why our favorite Jewish guy is devoted to spreading Christmas cheer.

Some really nice lines let me feel exacting what Starsk was feeling:

" . . . I felt like I'd just jumped into the deep end of a pool.  . . But I knew Hutch was there, and he wouldn't let me drown. Not now. Not ever."

"It was like crawling into a warm bed on the coldest night you could remember."

I really enjoyed this piece. The parallels the writer drew of what both partners were going through although by different routes really worked. It brought a few tears I must confess. And yes, thanks for bringing a more satisfying resolution to the pilot as well as an explanation as to why Hutch gets to drive Starsky`s car.

NOTE: This is a script treatment, a story with only partial dialog, no scene changes and little ‘direction.’ Some directorial instructions are included, in caps, but, hopefully, they will be self-explanatory. Character names are in capital letters the first time they appear.

Starsky and Hutch are involved in a serious traffic accident and, while waiting for help, relive a lot of memories, good and bad, sweet and sad.

Oh my gosh!  This is Brilliant!  Why didn't I read this before?  Once more, I feel saddened by the producers' tragic waste of unique and transformative show.  Kudos for this.

Author's Response:

Wow, Spencer, I didn't realize you hadn't read this one. I will treasure the 'brilliant' and the multiple kudos. I'm so glad you liked it. I, too, regretted the producer's short-sighted effort at a flashback episode. S&H had so much to draw from, one like mine, would have showcased what the series was all about: the boys communicating with each other on many levels. Unfortunately, the producers were focused on quick and dirty, not an episode that would have been unique to S&H. Ah well, I'm truly thrilled that you enjoyed my story. Thank you for reading and then for taking the time to write and let me know. THANK YOU. Pat

You bet!  I just came across these S/H sites recently and have been having great fun reading through everything.  I'm very impressed with the quality of the writing.  Wish I could bottle some of this imagination.

Author's Response:

I'm realtively newly come back to SH fandom myself, so I've been reading like crazy, too. Ain't it wonderful? As I've said in several reviews, if the series had had writers like the ones in fandom, it would still be on the air! Enjoy!

It was becoming harder and harder to find excuses to get away and Starsky was becoming more and more suspicious.  No, that wasn't the word, because Starsky trusted him.  More like worried.  Starsky deserved an explanation, but Hutch still couldn't explain this.

Author's Response:

The time line worked really well. It kept you wondering what was happening with Hutch and then when the explanation was finally revealed (which was actually the story line's triggering event), it was quite touching.

Author's Response:

Thank you for saying so!  I appreciate it.  Of all my stories I like this one the least.  You make me feel better about it!

It’s 2014. David Starsky is a History and Shop teacher in a private high school in a Chicago suburb. He’s been without Hutch for a very long time.

I thought that story was very sweet. I really liked the open and honest dialogue between Starsky and Hutch.  It seemed very genuine.  You did a great job of portraying a love that transcends all labels.

Spenser,

please accept my apology for not responding to this sooner. I must have missed the notice in my inbox. Thank you so much for your comments, it means a great deal! And I'd like to thank you, too, for writing so many reviews for the writers on our archive. I appreciate it so much! So few people are willing to take the time to thank the writers. "I-I'm sorry to drag you into this, Starsk," Hutch said, apologetically. "But-I didn't know who else to call. What to do. Where to go."

Starsky enfolded the hand Hutch was clutching the glass with in his own. "You did the right thing, calling me. I'm your friend. I'm here for you."

Hutch looked right into Starsky's calm, sympathetic gaze. "What am I gonna do, Starsk? She wants a divorce! How-how can I just let that happen? How'm I gonna get her back?"

Good gracious, Kathy!  What are you doing to our poor Hutch?  At first this story reminded me of when my hubs had back surgery and was in excruciating pain (but at least I didn't try to poison him). But its all good in the end when Dobey gets "his two boys back at work."  I'm so glad you were able to get your stories onto this site.
